Maryland Longitudinal Data System Statistician-(170000MR)
The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Social Work (SSW) is currently seeking a Statistician with experience using longitudinal data for education and workforce policy and program evaluation. The statistician will be a member of the Research Branch of the Maryland Longitudinal Data System (MLDS) Center. The MLDS Center is a state funded multiple-partner collaboration between the University of Maryland and three state agencies. Data analyses focus on cross-sector transitions—Pre-K to K-12; K-12 to postsecondary; K-12 to workforce; and postsecondary to workforce. The statistician is expected to apply advanced statistical methods (including multi-level modeling, propensity score analysis, regression discontinuity, etc.) to multi-level longitudinal education and workforce data. The statistician is expected to work collaboratively with the Research Director to conceptualize data analyses, implement data analyses, and communicate research findings in the form of policy reports, presentations, and publications. The statistician will also mentor doctoral students, and work in consultation with SSW and University of Maryland College of Education staff and faculty.

Determine methods of statistical analysis and apply techniques to determine means of measurement. Ensure validity and accuracy of data and compliance with quality control requirements.
Design and remodel quantitative research projects, analyze findings, develop conclusions, write reports, prepare presentations of relevant findings and conclusions, and recommend appropriate actions.
Perform required data extraction through programming such as SQL and report on progress of programs, studies, and/or projects. Duties include performing and supervising data collection; compile and analyze data; and interpretation of trends, fluctuations, and other changes.
Perform simple and sophisticated data searches and exchanges among micro, mini, and mainframe-based statistical software applications to generate standard and customized reports using statistical applications.
Develop and formulate best practices and protocols in data collection, warehousing, analysis, and reporting including developing special forms and/or formats for analyzing and presenting data.
Evaluates research methods, data analyses, and interpretation and provides critical feedback. Compiles, summarizes, and analyzes data, and interprets results for research and quality improvement projects.
Contributes methodological and statistical write ups and tables, charts, or graphs for presentations, manuscripts, and grants; occasionally provides oral presentations.
Mentors scholars to support research, quality improvement and other scholarly project development and completion.
Assist investigators with evaluating research projects, assisting in the preparation of required agency and/or funder reporting.
Explains methodological and statistical approaches to choose appropriate research and analytic approaches to meet specific aims.
Performs other duties as needed to support the research/scholarship mission of the SSW.
Education/Experience:Master's degree in statistics or mathematics and two (2) years ofstatistical analysis experience analyzing studies using a range of statisticaltechniques in a related environment.
Master's degree epidemiology or public health and three (3)years of statistical analysis experience analyzing studies using a range ofstatistical techniques in a related environment.
Preferred:Experienceusing two or more of the following statistical packages (Mplus, STATA, SAS, R),with in depth knowledge of at least one. Experience with meta-analysis,systematic reviews, advanced structural equation modeling, and propensity scoreanalysis.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge of quantitative statistics,including modern regression methods. Ability to design of research studies data collection procedures andwarehousing. Comprehensive knowledge of research and review methodologyincluding experimental and quasi-experimental, cross-sectional and longitudinalobservational research and quality improvement.Ability to interpret statistical data using software such as SAS, R,Stata, or Mplus. Skill in data analysis and statistical interpretation. Skillin data management software. Ability to understand and utilize health andstatistical terminology and research theory. Able to perform position incompliance with all requirements, regulations, and laws.Ability to maintain high standards with thework being performed and maintain awareness with trends and influences.Assumes personal responsibility for alloutcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; and learns how to effectivelyuse technology.Maintains productivityand uses knowledge strategies to increase knowledge base.
Excellent written skills for writing methods, results, andother statistical reports in a clear and concise way. Skill in presentingstatistical results using a variety of graphic and other presentation software.Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, andfacts.Interprets and understandswritten information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbalcues that lead to a deeper understanding.
