Reporting to the Associate Director, Teaching and Learning for Education Computing, the Business Intelligence Developer/Analyst is responsible for leading the Business Intelligence service, leveraging internal data to enable improvements to medical education. This position will work with education and technology stakeholders to identify BI opportunities, both by request (through investigations, presentations, and facilitation/elicitation sessions) and through proactive discovery efforts. The Business Intelligence Developer/Analyst for Education Computing will be responsible for executing a broad range of Business Intelligence solutions at every stage of the BI lifecycle - from data retrieval and processing to insight discovery to delivery and presentation.
This position will also participate more broadly in the HMS business intelligence initiatives as a subject matter expert, serving as an internal analytics and data science consultant for non-educational work. This will include contributing to departmental work such as systems selection and data warehouse development, as well as consulting for extra-departmental groups as appropriate.
Specific responsibilities include:
Assess and prioritize potential projects with department management to develop the service in a manner consistent with the department's goals and vision.
Evaluate and select BI resources, including tools, media and methods. Oversee such implementations in collaboration with technical staff.
Collaborate with Application Administrator to manage the BI infrastructure, including configure permissions and monitor performance.
Participate in initiatives for education data governance and quality, ensuring that information is accurate and insights are interpreted appropriately. This will include data quality testing as well as working with vendors and technical staff to resolve issues.
Establish partnerships with internal customers, maintaining regular communication with stakeholders and ensuring awareness of material changes to information, needs and priorities.
Present BI goals, methods and outcomes to diverse audiences to promote awareness and adoption of data-driven decision-making.
Perform ad hoc analyses to support departmental goals and initiatives.
Assist clients in the creation of BI positions and hiring of analytical staff.

Scope determination, identifying appropriate level of involvement for BI given potential impact, constraints and competing priorities
Identification of business needs and solutions, both proactively and in partnership with business units
Overseeing the day-to-day execution of BI and ensuring compliance with internal standards:
The ability to create and understand complex SQL queries.
Experience interacting with and extracting data from APIs.
Experience with relational data sources including transactional and star schemas. Exposure to unstructured NoSQL data sources is a plus.
Foundational understanding of xAPI & Caliper
Expert-level ability in Excel, including some VBA.
Professional experience with an enterprise reporting tool such as SAP Business Objects or Crystal Reports.
Professional experience with Tableau or comparable data visualization software.
Experience with a general purpose scripting language such as Python or Ruby.
Experience using a statistical programming language such as R, MATLAB, Octave, NumPy or Julia.
A record of success performing strategic and operational ad hoc analysis
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong facilitation and elicitation skills, including the demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders holding varied levels of technical knowledge and ability.

Experience working in a regulated data environment. Exposure to FERPA is particularly beneficial.
A track record of successful project management.
Proven experience leading early-stage analytics services.
Working knowledge of data science, including machine learning algorithms and technologies. In particular, the ability to identify and develop appropriate analytical solutions will be beneficial.
Understanding of data warehousing concepts.
Experience with QA, especially in the context of data quality.
Ability to write clear documentation for complex subjects, including business processes, data dictionaries, project decision logs and strategic and operational charters.
